Image optimisation means preparing photos so they look good on screen without being bigger files than they need to be. A photo straight off a modern phone can be several megabytes, which is fine in your camera roll and painfully slow on a web page. On every Nerdsharks site, each photo is automatically resized to suit the screen it is being shown on, so a phone gets a phone-sized image and a large monitor gets a larger one. Photos are also converted to modern formats called WebP and AVIF, which hold the same detail in a much smaller file, wherever the visitor's browser supports them.

## How it works

1. **Send photos as they are** - Upload them in the editor or send them on WhatsApp straight from your phone. You do not need to crop, shrink or convert anything first.
2. **Resized for every screen** - Several sizes of each photo are produced automatically, and each visitor's device is sent the size that suits its screen, not the full-size original.
3. **Converted to modern formats** - Browsers that support WebP or AVIF get those smaller files. Older browsers still get a standard version, so nobody sees a broken image.
4. **Loaded only when needed** - Photos further down a page wait to load until the visitor scrolls towards them, so the top of the page appears first and fast.

## Why it matters

- **Show off your work properly** - Before-and-after shots, finished kitchens and plated dishes sell your work. Optimisation means you can show plenty of them without the page grinding to a halt.
- **Kinder to mobile data** - Most of your visitors are on a phone, often on 4G. Smaller image files load faster on weak signal and use less of their data allowance.
- **Nothing technical for you** - No image editing software, no plugins, no settings to get wrong. Photos are handled the same way every time, automatically.

## Questions

### What are WebP and AVIF?

WebP and AVIF are modern image formats that store a photo in a much smaller file than an older JPEG, with little or no visible loss of quality. Most current browsers support them, and older ones are sent a standard format instead.

### Do I need to resize my photos before sending them?

No, send your photos exactly as they come off your phone or camera. Resizing and conversion happen automatically when they are added to your site.

### Will optimised photos look worse?

No, the aim is for photos to look just as good on screen while downloading faster. Each device gets a size that suits its screen, so detail is kept where it can actually be seen.

### Is there a limit on how many photos I can have?

A normal small business site can have plenty of photos without any problem. If you are planning a very large gallery, tell us and we will set it up so it still loads well.
