Indexing is when a search engine visits a page and adds it to the list of pages it can show in results. Left alone, search engines find new pages whenever they next happen to call by, which can take a while. On every Nerdsharks site we make your pages a priority and tell them instead. An XML sitemap, a list of every page on your site and when it last changed, is kept up to date automatically and submitted to Google through Google Search Console. We also use IndexNow, a standard supported by Bing and several other search engines, to notify them the moment a page is added or changed. Search engines still decide when and whether to index a page, but they are not left to stumble on it.

## How it works

1. **A sitemap that updates itself** - Your XML sitemap lists every public page with the date it last changed. It is regenerated each time the site is updated, so it is never out of date.
2. **Submitted to Google Search Console** - We connect your site to Google Search Console and submit the sitemap, which is how Google is told where to find your pages and how we see any indexing problems.
3. **IndexNow pings the moment you change** - When a page is published or updated, an IndexNow notification goes to Bing and the other search engines that support it, telling them to come and look.

## Why it matters

- **New pages found sooner** - A new service or a new area page is only useful once search engines know it exists. Telling them directly tends to get it picked up sooner than waiting.
- **Changes show up faster** - Updated prices or opening hours are more useful when search engines have the current version. Notifying them encourages a fresh visit.
- **Problems are spotted** - Search Console reports pages Google cannot index and why. Because we have it connected, we can see and fix those problems rather than never knowing.

## Questions

### What is IndexNow?

IndexNow is an open standard that lets a website tell search engines straight away when a page is added, changed or removed. It is supported by Bing and several other search engines. Google does not use it, so for Google we use a sitemap and Search Console.

### What is an XML sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file listing every page on your website, with the date each one last changed. Search engines read it to find your pages. Ours update automatically every time your site changes.

### Does priority indexing mean I will appear on Google straight away?

No, search engines decide when to index a page and where to rank it. Notifying them removes the wait for them to find it by chance, but nobody can honestly promise a page will appear by a certain time.

### Do I get access to Google Search Console?

Yes, Search Console is set up for your domain and we can give you access whenever you like. You do not need to use it; we keep an eye on it for you.
