# What is Mobile-first?

> Mobile-first means designing a website for phones before desktops, and it also describes Google primarily using the mobile version of a site when ranking it.

Also called: mobile-first design, mobile-first indexing.

As a design approach, mobile-first means starting with the small screen: deciding what someone on a phone needs most and building that, then expanding the layout for bigger screens. It forces clear priorities.

Google uses the phrase too. ‘Mobile-first indexing’ means Google mainly looks at the mobile version of your website when deciding how to rank it. If something is missing on mobile, as far as Google is concerned it may as well not exist.

The two meanings point the same way: the phone version of your website is the real one.

## Why it matters for a small business

Most businesses get a big share of their enquiries from phones, often from people in a hurry. A site designed mobile-first puts your number, your area and your reviews where a thumb can reach them.

**Example:** A locksmith's site is designed on a phone first: big ‘Call now’ button, areas covered and ‘24/7’ visible straight away. The desktop version is the same content spread out.
