Also called: site speed, load time, PageSpeed Insights, website speed.

Page speed is the everyday term for how fast your website feels. It is not one number: it includes how quickly something appears, when the main content is visible and when the page responds to taps. Core Web Vitals are Google's way of measuring those parts.

Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool tests a page and shows both lab results (a simulated test) and, where there is enough traffic, field data from real Chrome users.

The biggest wins for small sites are usually boring: smaller images, decent hosting, fewer plugins and scripts, and caching.

## Why it matters for a small business

A slow website loses visitors before they have read a word, and that is money spent on your website, ads or Google profile going to waste. Speed also plays a part in how Google ranks pages, particularly when competing sites are otherwise similar.

**Example:** A cleaning company's homepage loads a video background, four fonts and a chat widget. Swapping the video for a single compressed photo makes it load noticeably faster on 4G.
