Also called: search engine optimisation, search engine optimization.

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. In plain terms it means making sure Google can find your website, understands what you do and where you do it, and has good reasons to show you above the other people who do the same thing.

It breaks down into three rough piles: the technical side (a fast site Google can read properly), the content side (pages that clearly answer what customers are searching for), and the reputation side (reviews, mentions and links from other websites that suggest you are real and trusted).

There is no switch you can flip. Anyone promising ‘page one in 30 days’ or ‘guaranteed number one’ is selling something Google itself says nobody can guarantee. Good SEO is mostly doing the basics properly and then keeping at it.

## Why it matters for a small business

Most people looking for a plumber, groomer or café type it into Google and pick from the first few results. If you are not there, those enquiries go to whoever is, no matter how good your work is. SEO is how you earn a place without paying for every click.

**Example:** A roofer in Exeter with a page called ‘Roof repairs in Exeter’ that explains the work, shows photos and lists the areas covered has done basic SEO. A roofer whose only page says ‘Welcome to our website’ has not.
