# Websites for photographers

> Websites for photographers where the site has to disappear behind the work - and load fast while carrying a hundred large images.

There are 1,355 portrait photography businesses across 175 UK local authorities (ONS UK Business Counts, SIC 74201, 2025, OGL v3.0).

## How customers choose

Photography clients choose on style, and they know their taste when they see it. A couple booking a wedding will look at two or three complete galleries end to end, not a curated selection of highlights, because they need to know the whole day looks good rather than the best eight frames. They then check availability for their date before anything else, and price second. Commercial clients behave differently - they look for relevant sector work, turnaround and licensing terms, and they decide much faster.

## What most websites in this trade get wrong

Photographers build beautiful sites that take eight seconds to load because every image is a full-resolution JPEG. The irony is brutal: the work is the product and the work is what fails to appear. The second problem is a homepage slideshow that gives the visitor no control and no sense of a complete body of work. The third is hiding pricing entirely, which for weddings simply means fielding enquiries from people who were never in budget.

## What the website has to do

- **Date availability enquiry** - For weddings this is the first question and the natural conversion point.
- **Full gallery views** - Complete galleries, not highlights, are what convince a couple.
- **Commercial project enquiry** - Higher-frequency, sector-specific work with faster decisions.

## Pages

- **Home** - A small number of exceptional images, loading instantly.
- **Portfolio** - Complete galleries by category.
- **Weddings** - Full days, packages and availability.
- **Commercial** - Sector work, licensing and turnaround.
- **Pricing** - At minimum a starting figure, to filter enquiries.
- **About** - Style and approach - clients are buying a person for the day.
- **Contact** - Date, venue and package.

## Features that matter

- **Aggressive image optimisation with modern formats and lazy loading** - A photography site that loads slowly fails at the only thing it exists to do.
- **Complete galleries rather than curated highlight reels** - Couples need to see a whole day to trust you with theirs.
- **Date availability check or enquiry** - The first question every wedding client asks.
- **A starting price, even if packages vary** - Filters out enquiries that were never going to book.
- **Correct image credit and licensing information** - Commercial clients need to know what they are buying.

Trust signals: Complete real galleries; Venue experience; Insurance and backup equipment; Delivery timescales.

Seasonality: Wedding bookings are made twelve to twenty-four months ahead, with enquiry peaks after Christmas and Valentine’s engagements.

## Questions

### How important is photography, really?

In visual trades it is the entire decision. Customers shortlist from photographs and read the words afterwards, if at all. It is worth paying a photographer for half a day once a year - it will change the size of the jobs you are asked to quote for more than anything else you could spend the money on.

### How do I show high-quality images without the site being slow?

Serve modern image formats at the right size for the device, load images only as they come into view, and never put a full-resolution file on a web page. Done properly, a portfolio can carry hundreds of images and still load in under a second - which matters, because a slow photography site fails at the only thing it exists to do.

### Should I put my prices on my website?

Almost always yes. Hiding prices loses more enquiries than it protects, because people assume the worst and go to a competitor who publishes theirs. If your pricing genuinely varies, publish a range and explain in one sentence what moves it - that converts far better than "contact us for a quote".
