# Hallow Field Photography - website by Nerdsharks

> A wedding and portrait photographer whose website takes eight seconds to load because every image is a full-resolution JPEG, and whose homepage is an autoplaying slideshow the visitor cannot control. Designed and built by Nerdsharks.

## Design rationale

Hallow Field opens like a lookbook. There is no slideshow and no text over a photograph. The first screen is fibre-paper cream with the name split into two huge Bodoni Moda words: 'Hallow' at the top left and an italic 'Field' at the bottom right. Between them runs a contact sheet of six black-and-white frames. On load the six prints start in a single pile in the centre and are dealt out to their places in about a second and a half, while the letters rise out of their masks. Where the type crosses a photograph it inverts, so the words seem to sit in the prints. Every picture is toned to the same warm monochrome so the work reads as one body of work. 'Selected frames' is an asymmetric editorial wall, and any frame opens full size in a lightbox with previous and next, built with no JavaScript. 'One Saturday' pins a strip of film, complete with sprocket holes and amber edge print, and slides it sideways as you scroll while a large clock rolls from 10:45 to 22:15. Prices are listed plainly in a numbered list, and hovering a collection changes the photograph beside it. The page ends on a date-first enquiry form.

## Features

- **A contact sheet that deals itself out on load** - The page opens as the work itself, so couples judge the photographs within a second, with no slideshow to wait for.
- **Giant split wordmark that inverts over the prints** - Gives a fine-art, editorial first impression that no template portfolio has.
- **'One Saturday' pinned film strip with a rolling clock** - Shows that clients receive the whole day, around 700 frames, rather than a highlight reel.
- **Selected frames that open full size in a lightbox** - Couples can look at a picture properly, the way their own gallery will look, without leaving the page.
- **Collections with plain prices and a 'most couples choose this' marker** - An upfront price filters out enquiries that were never in budget and saves both sides time.
- **Date-first enquiry form** - The date is what runs out, so asking for it first turns browsers into real bookings.
