01 / Prices

What it costs

Rooms priced for a standard skim over sound plaster. If it needs hacking off and re-boarding, we will say so from the photo.

By the room

Walls

A skim is priced on the room, not the hour. Most bedrooms are one day, one visit, one price.

Cost more

Ceilings

Working overhead is slower, and textured ceilings are tested for asbestos before anything is touched.

By the m²

Render

Outside work is measured, because mesh, beads and scaffold scale with the wall, not the room.

02 / The coats

Four layers to flat

What actually happens between a tired wall and one you can paint. Most rooms are only the last two.

  1. 01

    Coat 1 of 4

    Strip & prep

Blown plaster hacked back to sound, beads fixed, sockets masked, floors and doorways sheeted before a bucket is mixed.

An old wall with paint and plaster flaking away in patches
  2. 02

    Coat 2 of 4

    Float coat

Where a wall is out, a backing coat brings it back to true, ruled off with a straight edge and scratched to key.

A room mid-renovation with fresh grey plaster on the walls and a site light on a tripod
  3. 03

    Coat 3 of 4

    Two-coat skim

Finish plaster in two thin coats, trowelled up three times as it firms, then checked in side light with a two-metre edge.

A plasterer’s hands working fresh finish plaster across a trowel with a hawk
  4. 04

    Coat 4 of 4

    Dry & decorate

Pink to pale in about a week. Mist-coat with thinned emulsion, then paint as normal. It is all on the card.

03 / Process

Photo to paint

Five steps, one visit for most rooms, and nothing left to memory.

  1. 01

Send a photo and the sizes

Length, width and ceiling height, plus one photo in daylight. Tell us if anything needs taking off first.

  2. 02

Get a fixed price the same day

A number, not a range. If the photo is not enough we come and look, free, usually that week.

  3. 03

We sheet and tape the room

Floors covered, sockets masked, doorways sealed with dust sheeting.

  4. 04

    Skim, usually in a day

Two coats, trowelled flat and checked with a two-metre straight edge.

  5. 05

A drying card left on the wall

When to mist-coat, when to paint and what to use, written down so nobody has to remember.

Most rooms we can price from dimensions and a picture. If we need to see it, we come and look for free. We reply the same working day, usually by teatime.
