What is AI Overviews?

Also called: AI overview, Search Generative Experience, SGE, AI search, generative search.

For some searches, Google now shows a generated answer above the usual results. It pulls information from several websites, summarises it, and shows links to the pages it drew on.

They appear most often for questions and research-style searches, such as ‘how often should a boiler be serviced’, and less often for straightforward local searches like ‘plumber near me’, where the map pack still dominates.

Being quoted in them tends to favour pages that answer a question clearly in the first sentence or two, with accurate, well-organised information Google can trust. The same principles apply to other AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Why it matters for your business

If people get their answer without clicking, informational pages may get fewer visits. But being the business named and linked in the answer builds trust with someone who may need you soon. Clear, factual pages give you the best chance of being the source rather than being skipped.

Example. Someone searches ‘how long does a dog groom take’. The AI Overview gives a short answer and links to a local groomer's FAQ page that explained it plainly, sending that groomer a visitor who owns a dog.
