Your verdict

0 of 12 answered

Answer every question for your verdict

Each “Yes” scores points, weighted by how much it affects enquiries. 85 or more is up to date; 55 to 84 is showing its age; under 55 is costing you enquiries. A “No” on phones or security caps the verdict, because nothing else makes up for it.

Want the answers checked for you? The free website grader runs 22 automatic checks on your site, covering many of these, in about 15 seconds.

How it works

How the verdict is worked out

  1. Weighted answers

Each “Yes” scores points. Things that decide whether a visitor gets in touch, like working on a phone and being secure, are worth more than cosmetic things like the footer year.

  2. A score out of 100

Your points divided by the maximum. 85 or more is up to date, 55 to 84 is showing its age, and under 55 is costing you enquiries.

  3. Hard stops

A “No” on working on phones or on security caps the verdict at the lowest band. Nothing else on the site makes up for a page visitors cannot use or do not trust.

  4. “Not sure” is not a pass

Not sure scores nothing and appears in your list as something to check, because an answer you do not know is usually worth finding out.

  5. Fixes in order

Every “No” comes with a plain-English fix, sorted so the ones that cost you most are first.

Questions

Common questions

How do I know if my website is outdated?
Check it on your phone. If you have to pinch or zoom, cannot tap to call, see “Not secure” in the address bar, wait more than a few seconds for it to load, or find out-of-date prices or photos, it is outdated in the ways that cost enquiries.
How often should a small business website be redesigned?
There is no fixed number of years. A site that is kept up to date, works well on phones and is secure can last a long time. Most need a rebuild when the technology underneath makes simple changes hard, or when the site no longer reflects the business.
Does an outdated website affect Google rankings?
It can. Google favours pages that work well on phones, load quickly and are secure, and it cannot show what it cannot read. Just as important, visitors who leave straight away never become customers, whatever your ranking.
Can I fix my website or do I need a new one?
Many things on the list are quick fixes: the footer year, tap-to-call links, adding reviews. If the site fails on phones or is built on something you cannot edit safely, a rebuild is usually cheaper than patching it over and over.
Is this the same as the website grader?
No. This quiz asks you what you see, including things only you know, like when the site was last updated. The website grader fetches your page and runs automatic checks. Together they give you the full picture.
