Description width985 / 920px162 characters

1 thing to look at

  • GoodThe title fits: 56 characters, about 534px.
  • GoodYour business name is at the end, after what you do. Good.
  • GoodThe title mentions Exeter, which matches how local customers search.
  • GoodNo repeated keywords in the title.
  • CheckThe description is about 985px wide, so it will probably be cut off on desktop. Keep the key point in the first sentence.
  • GoodThe description includes a next step, which gives people a reason to click.

Widths are measured at the font sizes search results use (about 20px for titles and 14px for descriptions), against approximate limits of 600px for titles and 920px (desktop) or 680px (mobile) for descriptions. Google changes its layout, and it sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions, so treat this as a close guide rather than an exact copy.

How it works

What the preview measures

  1. Pixels, not characters

Search results cut titles and descriptions by how much room they take up, not by a character count. A title full of Ws runs out of room long before one full of Is. The tool measures your text at the size results use.

  2. Cut-off point

If the text is wider than the approximate limit (about 600px for titles, 920px for descriptions on desktop, 680px on mobile), the preview trims it at a word and adds an ellipsis, as a results page would.

  3. What customers look for

Local customers usually search for a service and a place. The checks look for your town in the title, your business name at the end, and a next step in the description.

  4. Things that put people off

Repeated keywords and text in capitals read as spammy to people and to Google. The checks flag both, along with pages still served over plain http.

Google may rewrite it anyway. Google sometimes shows a different title or description if it thinks another part of your page answers the search better. It happens less when your title and description are accurate, specific and match the page, which is exactly what these checks push you towards.

Questions

Common questions

How long should a meta title be?
Aim for about 50–60 characters, and think in width rather than count: Google cuts titles at roughly 600 pixels on desktop. Put the service and place first and your business name at the end, so the part that matters survives if the end is cut off.
How long should a meta description be?
About 120–155 characters works well on desktop, and the first sentence should make sense on its own because mobile often shows less. Say what you offer, why pick you, and end with a next step such as calling or booking.
Why does Google show a different title from the one I wrote?
Google rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks they do not describe the page well, are stuffed with keywords, are too long, or are the same across many pages. A unique, accurate title for each page is the best way to keep yours.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
Not directly. Google has said the meta description is not a ranking factor. It still matters because it is part of your listing: a clear, specific description can persuade more of the people who see your result to click on it.
Should every page have its own title and description?
Yes. Each page should describe what is on that page. Copying the same title across the site makes pages compete with each other and gives Google a reason to write its own. Our free website grader checks whether your homepage has both.
