Tips for a good domain

  • Buy the .co.uk and the .com if you can, so nobody else gets the other one.
  • Register it in your own name or your company’s, not your web designer’s.
  • No hyphens or numbers: people forget them when they type.
  • Short beats clever. Say it down the phone once: if you have to spell it, think again.
  • Match your business name where you can, so customers can guess it.

20 ideas, best first

We cannot see whether a domain is free without asking the registry, so tap a check link to search it. We have no affiliate links: we earn nothing if you buy through them.

How it works

How the ideas are made

  1. Tidy the name

We drop words that add length but not meaning, like Ltd, Services and Solutions, and turn & into “and”, because symbols cannot go in a domain.

  2. Build variations

Your name as it is, your full name, your name plus your town or what you do, what you do plus where, initials, and “the” or “get” in front.

  3. Score each one

Every idea starts at 100 and loses points for length past 12 letters, hyphens, digits, three letters in a row and deliberate misspellings. .uk loses a little because fewer people type it.

  4. Check it yourself

Each idea links to the ICANN registration lookup and two registrar searches, so you can see in seconds whether it is free. We do not check for you, so we never show a “free” label that turns out to be wrong.

No affiliate links. We earn nothing from any registrar. Whoever you buy from, make sure the domain is registered in your name or your company’s, with the login in your hands.

Questions

Common questions

Should I get a .co.uk or a .com for a UK business?
For a business that works in the UK, .co.uk tells customers you are local and is what most people expect. If you can, buy both and point the .com at your site, so nobody else can take it and customers who guess .com still find you.
How do I check if a domain name is available?
Search it at a domain registrar or on the ICANN lookup, which shows whether it is already registered and when. Every idea above has those links. Availability can change quickly, so buy a good one as soon as you find it.
Is .uk the same as .co.uk?
No. They are separate addresses that can belong to different people. .uk is shorter but less familiar, so many customers will type .co.uk by habit. If you have the .co.uk, check whether the matching .uk is free too.
Should my domain include my town?
Only if your business name is taken or very generic. A town can help people see you are local, but it makes the address longer and can feel limiting if you grow. Your business name on its own is usually the better choice.
Who should own my domain name?
You should. Register it in your own name or your company’s, and keep the login. If a web designer registers it for you, make sure it is in your name, because whoever owns the domain controls your website address and email.
