Websites for bricklayers

Websites for bricklayers that win the work.

Websites for bricklayers that talk to two buyers at once: the builder who needs a gang that turns up, and the homeowner who wants a garden wall or repointing done properly. From £99 a month, live in 3 working days.

How people actually choose a bricklayer.

A great deal of bricklaying is bought by other builders. Main contractors, developers and extension builders hire bricklayers on a price per thousand or a day rate, and choose on whether you turn up with enough hands, lay to line and keep the job moving. They find you by word of mouth and check your site to confirm you are real and can handle their size of job. Homeowners are a separate market: garden and boundary walls, chimney rebuilds, repointing an old house, small extensions where they are managing the trades themselves. They care about new work matching the old - the brick, the mortar colour, the joint profile - and on older houses, whether you understand lime. They are slower to decide and far more influenced by photographs of walls that look like theirs.

When demand peaks. Mortar cannot be laid in frost, so bricklaying slows in the coldest weeks and contractors book gangs hard from spring. Homeowner walls and repointing peak in spring and summer.

The problem

What most bricklayers websites get wrong.

Many bricklayers have no website at all, and the ones that exist are usually a single page with a phone number and a photo of a half-built wall. That is enough for a builder who already knows you and not enough for anyone else. Homeowners need to see matching work - new brick beside old, repointing on period houses, curved and decorative work - and whether you take small jobs. Contractors want gang size, areas covered, cards, insurance, and whether you work labour-only or supply-and-lay. Most sites answer neither audience, so both ring someone else.

What it has to do

The jobs a bricklayer website is built for.

  1. Contractor enquiries for labour-only and supply-and-lay work

Steady volume from builders keeps a gang busy.

  2. Homeowner quote requests with photos

Walls and repointing can often be priced from photos and a measurement.

  3. Period and lime work

Specialist, better-paid and hard for customers to find anyone for.

Concept build

What a bricklayer website could look like.

People planning a £60,000 extension want proof of finished work and a builder who keeps to the programme, so the page is built like an architecture magazine cover. There is no hero banner: the headline 'Finished when we said' is set enormous in light Source Serif 4 across the whole page, and a portrait photograph of a dusk extension stands in the middle of it, with the words turning from ink to paper exactly where they cross the picture. On load the photo opens from a thin slit while the lines rise out of their masks.

Questions

Bricklayers: what people ask us

Does a bricklayer’s website need to speak to builders and homeowners separately?
Yes - builders and homeowners want different information, so a bricklayer’s website works best with a separate route for each. A contractor wants gang size, how you price, areas covered, CSCS cards and insurance; a homeowner wants to see walls like theirs and know whether you take small jobs. Two short, clear pages beat one page trying to say everything to everyone.
Should I say on my website that I don’t take small bricklaying jobs?
If there is a size of job you do not take, saying so on your website saves you and the customer time. A line as simple as “we take on work from a day upwards” stops the calls about a single loose brick. If you do welcome small jobs, say that instead - plenty of homeowners assume bricklayers only work for builders and never ask.
What if I do not have photographs of my work?
Start taking them now, on your phone, before and after every job. Photographs of your own finished work convert better than any stock image or any amount of copy, and in the trades they are the single biggest factor in the size of job you get asked to quote for. We will lay out the site to work with whatever you have and improve as you build up a library.
