Your customers

How people actually choose a wedding photographer.

Couples book a wedding photographer early - often a year or more ahead, and straight after the venue - so the first question is always "are you free on our date". Discovery runs through venue supplier lists, Instagram, Pinterest, wedding directories and search, very often in the form "wedding photographer" plus a venue or county. Couples shortlist on style: documentary or posed, light and airy or moody, and they have usually decided which they like before they arrive. They then want to see complete weddings, not a best-of grid, to be sure you deliver consistently through a dark church, a rainy drinks reception and a dancefloor. Price is the next filter, and most couples are working to a total budget. Finally they want to feel they will get on with you, which is why an about page with a real face and a relaxed call booking matter more here than in most trades.

When demand peaks. Enquiries peak between Christmas and March, after the proposal season and wedding fairs. The shooting season runs mainly from late spring to early autumn.

The problem

What most wedding photographers websites get wrong.

Wedding photography websites are heavy by nature, and many are painfully slow on a phone - large galleries with full-size files, autoplay slideshows and heavy templates. A couple flicking between five tabs will not wait. The second failure is "get in touch for pricing": couples on a fixed budget skip sites that hide it and enquire with those that show a starting price. The third is showing only highlights: without full wedding galleries or blog posts, couples cannot judge consistency, and a site with nothing written about named venues misses the searches couples make most. Finally, many enquiry forms ask for too little (no date, no venue) or far too much, and the date check that should take a minute becomes a week of emails.

What it has to do

The jobs a wedding photographer website is built for.

  1. Date availability enquiry

The first thing every couple needs to know, and the start of every booking.

  2. Discovery call booking

Couples book people they like; the call is where most bookings are won.

  3. Full-gallery views

Seeing a complete wedding is what convinces a couple you are consistent.

Concept build

What a wedding photographer website could look like.

Hallow Field opens like a lookbook. There is no slideshow and no text over a photograph. The first screen is fibre-paper cream with the name split into two huge Bodoni Moda words: 'Hallow' at the top left and an italic 'Field' at the bottom right.

Questions

Wedding Photographers: what people ask us

Do blog posts about weddings at specific venues actually help?
Yes, venue-specific posts are among the most useful content a wedding photographer can publish. Couples often search for photographers who have worked at their venue, and a post with a proper gallery, a few paragraphs about the day and the venue name answers that directly. Over a few seasons they build into a strong local presence.
Should I show full wedding galleries or just my best images?
Show both: a tight portfolio of your best work and at least a few complete weddings. Couples want to know you are consistent through the whole day, including low light, bad weather and the dancefloor. A full gallery answers that question in a way a highlight grid cannot.
How important is photography, really?
In visual trades it is the entire decision. Customers shortlist from photographs and read the words afterwards, if at all. It is worth paying a photographer for half a day once a year - it will change the size of the jobs you are asked to quote for more than anything else you could spend the money on.
How do I show high-quality images without the site being slow?
Serve modern image formats at the right size for the device, load images only as they come into view, and never put a full-resolution file on a web page. Done properly, a portfolio can carry hundreds of images and still load in under a second - which matters, because a slow photography site fails at the only thing it exists to do.
